Nothing's fine, I'm torn

I must admit that I am somewhat conflicted about today's events. Certainly, I am sad that the ban was upheld, but I am not sure that I completely disagree with the ruling. As I understand it, the citizens of California have a right to amend their constitution with a simple majority vote of the people. 50%+1 is still a simple majority. However, this is not set in stone. You can bet that in 2010 or 2012, this will be on the ballot again.

I fear that the real message today will be lost in the emotions that are boiling over in California and elsewhere. I may disagree with the outcome, but I think the justices had to find in favor of the rule of law. If Proposition 8 was lawfully passed, then we need to accept that and strengthen our resolve to move forward.
